Marlene Cano, MD, PhD Awarded NIH K08 Career Development Grant

The Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine is pleased to announce that Marlene Cano, MD, PhD, Assistant Professor of Medicine, has been awarded a Mentored Clinical Scientist Development Award (K08) from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) of the National Institutes of Health. Her project, “Immuno-Metabolic Drivers of Chronic Rejection after Lung Transplant,” will investigate the immunological and metabolic mechanisms underlying chronic rejection, one of the leading causes of long-term graft failure in lung transplant recipients, with the goal of identifying therapeutic targets that can be translated into clinical strategies to improve patient outcomes after transplant.

The K08 is a prestigious NIH career development mechanism designed to support clinician-scientists in developing the research skills and independence needed to pursue a sustained career in patient-oriented research. The award provides protected time and funding for Dr. Cano to advance her program of research in transplant immunology and metabolism.

This grant marks Dr. Cano’s third research award of the year, joining her recently announced Parker B. Francis Fellowship, and reflects the growing momentum of her research program. The Division looks forward to the contributions her work will make to the field of lung transplantation.
