James Krings, MD, MSCI, Assistant Professor of Medicine, was recently published in Annals of Internal Medicine. The study, A New Approach to Reliever Therapy in Asthma: Implications of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and U.S. Department of Defense Clinical Practice Guideline”.

Asthma affects approximately 25 million people in the United States and remains one of the most common chronic conditions managed in primary care. Despite the availability of effective therapies, more than half of patients with asthma have uncontrolled disease and experience recurrent exacerbations, many of which are preventable with optimal treatment.

The way we treat asthma is changing. Albuterol alone is no longer the best reliever option for many patients, and our team at WashU Medicine is working to help clinics adopt newer, evidence-based approaches like SMART therapy.”

Clinicians caring for patients with asthma should strongly consider ICS–formoterol-based reliever therapy—either alone or as part of SMART—as the default approach where feasible and reassess patients maintained on SABA-only regimens. By aligning everyday practice with contemporary evidence and guidelines, clinicians have a tangible opportunity to improve outcomes for millions of patients with asthma managed in primary care.

The Division of Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine is proud of Dr. Krings and his contributions to the allergy community.
