The division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine is pleased to share that Colleen McEvoy, MD, Associate Professor of Medicine and Medical Director of the Stem Cell Transplant and Oncology Intensive Care Unit, has been awarded a grant from The Foundation for Barnes-Jewish Hospital.
The grant will fund a six-month pilot of the first Patient Life and Wellness (PLW) consultation service at Barnes-Jewish Hospital/Siteman Cancer Center, developed with Child Life On Call®. Child life services are standard in pediatric care, but they are rarely available in adult oncology. Dr. McEvoy’s project will bring these services to hospitalized young adults with cancer and to adult oncology patients who are parents of minor children. Certified child life specialists will offer virtual support, including coping support, communication coaching for parents, and legacy and bereavement care. They will also train inpatient oncology and ICU staff to support these patients and their families.
The pilot puts BJH/Siteman in a position to become one of the first NCI-designated cancer centers to make these services part of adult cancer care.
Congratulations, Dr. McEvoy!
