Laboratory Research and Other Scholarly Activities

My basic science research concerns mechanisms of lung remodeling during lung development and with destructive lung disorders, especially emphysema, COPD and pulmonary fibrosis. I focus on lung extracellular matrix, especially elastin, proteins that comprise basement membranes, and proteinases that degrade extracellular matrix. My clinical research is about airway dimensions in patients with COPD.

I chair NIH/NHLBI committees that oversee multi-center studies of COPD (SPIROMICS), sarcoidoisis and alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency (GRADS), and lymphangioleiomyomatosis (SLAM). I am involved in world-wide pulmonary education through co-editing and authoring chapters in “Fishman’s Pulmonary Diseases and Disorders”, 5th edition, 2015.
