The Jacqueline Maritz Lung Center, located in the newly built Center for Advanced Medicine, is staffed by full-time attendings and the fellows. More than 1,000 new patients and more than 3,000 return patients were seen in the Lung Center in fiscal year 2007.
The pulmonary function laboratory is completely equipped for clinical and research oriented testing and is staffed with six full-time technicians. Routine pulmonary function testing (spirometry, lung volume determination and diffusing capacity) is performed using computerized MedGraphics 10850X plethysmographic systems. Bronchodilator responsiveness and bronchial provocation with methacholine are adjunctive studies regularly employed. Formal cardiopulmonary exercise testing is performed using cycle ergometer associated with a MedGraphics CardiO2 system. Both arterial blood gas analysis and transcutaneous oximetry are available. Annually, more than 9,000 pulmonary function studies are performed on patients with a wide range of health concerns.
