Alec Patterson, M.D., from thoracic surgery and Elbert Trulock, M.D., from pulmonary medicine are the directors of the lung and heart-lung transplant program. The program began in 1988, and since then more than 600 patients have undergone lung transplantation at Barnes-Jewish Hospital. Approximately 200 patients with various end-stage lung diseases are evaluated each year, and approximately 50-60 transplant operations are performed annually. The inpatient lung transplant service has an average daily census of 8-10 patients, a busy bronchoscopy schedule with over 300 procedures per year, and two busy half-day outpatient clinics.
