Interventional Pulmonology

The Interventional Pulmonology Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine, in conjunction with the Siteman Cancer Center, is dedicated to the evaluation and treatment of patients with a variety of lung disorders - including airway obstructions, pleural effusions and pulmonary complications of cancer. The Interventional Pulmonology Center, led by international pulmonologist Martin Mayse, M.D. is one of only a handful in the United States.

Using specialized training and cutting-edge technology, the center offers the following services:

Advanced diagnostic bronchoscopy

For early detection of lung cancer
For the evaluation of mediastinal and hilar lymph nodes and masses
For improved assessibility of peripheral lung lesions

Therapeutic bronchoscopy

For multi-modal treatment of malignant and benign airway obstructions

Pleural Diagnostics and Therapeutics

For evaluation of pleural disease
For evaluation of pleural effusions
For the management of malignant pleural effusions
To diagnose unknown pleural effusions

Collaboration through the Complicated Airway Service


In addition, patients receive comprehensive care from a multidisciplinary staff of Washington University specialists:

Interventional Pulmonology evaluates patients in collaboration with physicians in thoracic surgery, otolaryngology and diagnostic radiology to ensure appropriate evaluation and management of patients with complicated airways.

The relationship ensures seamless referrals across medical specialities.

Treating pulmonary complications of cancer

Interventional Pulmonology works closely with referring medical oncologists to treat patients with pulmonary complications of cancer.

Interventional Pulmonology can facilitate referrals to Siteman Cancer Center oncologists for further management of thoracic cancer.

The Alvin J. Siteman Cancer Center is the only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center within 250 miles of St. Louis.

Convenient location and dedicated suite

Patients are initially seen at the Jacqueline Maritz Lung Center on the 8th Floor of the Center for Advanced Medicine at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, or at Barnes- Jewish West County Hospital.

Outpatient procedures are performed at the new Interventional Pulmonology Center on the street level of the Barnes-Jewish Hospital south campus.

The Center has a full-time staff comprised of an attending physician, an advanced practice registered nurse, respiratory therapists, registered nurses, and pulmonary fellows.
