RESEARCH PROJECTS ONGOING OR COMPLETED DURING THE LAST 3 YEARS

"Mechanisms in the remodeling of lung structure"
Project 1: Laminin a chains in lung development and disease.
Agency: NIH-NHLBI (Program Project)
Type: PO1 (HL29594, Years 16-20) Period: September 1, 1998 to August 31, 2003
The goals of this project are to 1)assess the affects of laminin a5 deficiency on lung development, 2) define the regulation of laminin a5, and 3) determine laminin a5 expression in lung injury.
Role: Program Director/Project Leader: R.M. Senior

"Mechanisms in the remodeling of lung structure"
Core A : Administrative Core
Agency: NIH-NHLBI (Program Project)
Type: PO1 (HL29594, Years 16-20) Period: September 1, 1998 to August 31, 2003
Supervision of the administrative functions of the Program Project.
Role: Program Director/Project Leader: R.M. Senior

"92 kDa gelatinase and collagenases in emphysema"
Agency: NIH-NHLBI
Type: RO1 (HL47328, Years 6-10) Period: February 1, 1997 Ð January 31, 2002
The goals of this grant are 1) localize the elastin binding site in 92 kDa gelatinase fibronectin repeats, 2) define the function of 92 kDa gelatinase in inflammatory cells, and 3) determine whether 92 kDa deficiency protects mice from smoke-induced emphysema.
Role: Principal Investigator: R.M. Senior

Pending Grants:
"The Role of Gelatinase B in Terminal Airway Remodeling"
Agency: NIH-NHLBI
Type: RO1 (HL47328, Years 11-15) Period: July 1, 2002 - June 30, 2007
The goals of this grant are 1) to determine whether gelatinase B expression by Clara cells rescues defects in epithelial cell repair in terminal airways associated with gelatinase B deficiency, 2) to define the role of gelatinase B in Clara cell function, and 3) to assess the effects of EMMPRIN on the expression of matrix metalloproteinases by lung cells.
Role: Principal Investigator: R.M. Senior
