Welcome to the website for the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine of the Department of Medicine at Washington University in St. Louis. The Division aims to provide the highest levels of patient care combined with our missions for medical education and research. With respect to patient care, we specialize in each of the areas of respiratory diseases, with national leaders focused on many of these disorders. We use this strong clinical base to build our educational and research programs. Our educational activities include a fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine that attracts outstanding trainees as well as a predoctoral training program that is integrated into the University’s graduate student program. The centerpiece of our training program is an NIH-funded training grant in principles of pulmonary research that includes 35 faculty serving as primary mentors. Our research activities are among the best developed in the world. Annual funding of nearly $20 million provides support for activities in approximately 20,000 square feet of modern research space. We are currently fortunate to have three NIH-funded centers of excellence in Asthma and Allergic Disease, Mechanisms of COPD, and Biology of Lung Remodeling. Our research program has a long tradition of spanning and integrating basic to clinical research approaches to truly provide for a translational approach to pathogenesis and therapy of lung disease. We also take special pride in providing a well-orchestrated mentorship of trainees to maximize their potential for long term careers in medicine. We appreciate your interest in our program and we hope that we will have the opportunity to tell you more in person.
